Hart Chart: Purdue

I'm on a HUGE adrenaline high from today's events (see: Les Miles and Jeff Tedford being dethroned), so what the hell, lets Hart Chart!

OH NOES! Hart Charting is horrifyingly cut short as Number Twenty's day is cut short by an ankle injury that left me breathless when it happened and left me hopeful when I saw Him on the sideline in the second half without crutches, without a noticeable limp, and a smile on his face.

Notes to know:
  • Carries 1 & 2: Chalk it up to Big Ten Network incompetence; these plays are almost entirely missed while the BTN runs their fancy lineup graphics that I'm sure they think are state of the art.
  • Carry 19: Most yardage negated by holding penalty committed by Boren.
  • Carry 21: Curse you Ortmann! You got beat by your man, and said man tackled Mike and injured him!
By the numbers:

Left:
12 carries, 47 yards, 2 TDs
Middle: 6 carries, 33 yards
Right: 3 carries, 22 yards

Thoughts:
  • I swear I'm being objective when watching Jake Long. He's just not getting beat, period.
  • Boren was actually improved. Still in the red, but he looked better.
  • Schilling had a bit of a rough outing; same for Kraus.
  • Moundros is starting to get it.
  • Ortmann, you better hope Hart is okay and ready for next week, or I will put the kibosh on you.
"You know I've kiboshed before...and I will...kibosh again."
  • On 37 first down plays, Michigan ran the ball 22 times - about 59.5%, a much healthier ratio. That includes all plays, not just Mike Hart carries. But look at the result: 48 points, a career day for Mario Manningham, Carlos Brown looked great in the 2nd half when Hart and Minor were injured, and no INTs for Chad Henne. On the first play of the game, Michigan ran playaction and got a first down on a pass to Carson Butler. I hope this was a turning point in the season for Carr and DeBord - keep the defenses honest by throwing on first down, and this offense is pretty damn potent. Considering the task ahead of us in Illinois, a potent offense will be required. Illinois doesn't scare me nearly as much as they did a week ago because Juice Williams can't throw, but we've all seen what a mobile QB can do when he runs the option against Michigan's defense. The offense is going to have to bring it, just like they did today.

Please be okay Mike. The Illinois fear factor is reduced by the fact that they lost to William Shatner (AKA Kirk Ferentz), but still...spread offense, mobile QB, etc...we need you. That and the whole "Heisman frontrunner thing".

All it takes is for the ILL QBs to pull a career day out of their asses and we could be toast. DeBord MUST approach this game like our D is going to get torched.
Armanti Edwards and Dennis Dixon hace yet to play as well against anyother team than they did against Michigan. Sure, some of that was our D being inept, but even their own teammates were saying their guys were "in the zone." We need to assume Juice and the other guy will be stoked and play above their standard level of play. It won't surprise me to see them throw accurate passes downfield. We'll all then be griping "where the fuck was THAT all season?"
But as a Michigan grad pushing 40, I've seen WAY too many games when an opponent approached the Michigan game as their own mini-national title game and play out of their asses. Does it piss me off seeing a chump pull the game of his life out of his ass thengo back to sucking the next week?
You bet.
Having said that, our D should play to take away the run and assume they can'tthrow over the top if and until they prove otherwise. We didn't force Appy State to throw over the top and it killed us. Thanks, Ron!

I love the Hart Chart. Great feature.

I hate the idea of getting into a shoot-out with Illinois, because Carr and DeBord tend to coach as if our defense can save us, when this year it can't.

Juice still terrifies me, Iowa game or no Iowa game. And Benn scares me. And Mendenhall. Illinois has more playmakers than Penn State did, that's for sure. Maybe more than anyone we've played, save Oregon.

I hope we double Benn the whole game. Their other WRs (Willis, Hudson, etc) are bad, but Benn is terrifying. We need to put Trent & a safety on Benn at all times. Shadow Williams with the other safety and dare them to go over the top (Juice can't....he has no arm) and contain the running attack.

Oh man....I'm scared already.
