2010 Recruiting Update - 10/3

New (10/3):

Editorial (10/3): Obviously the biggest news is the first two commitments for the 2010 class. FL WR Ricardo Miller committed on Monday, and MI WR Jeremy Jackson followed suit on Wednesday. With that, Michigan's need for outside receivers is drastically reduced.

The good news will likely continue to roll in for the 2010 class, as uber-recruit FL S Marvin Robinson has all but committed to Michigan. He recently asked Ohio State to stop recruiting him, and is coming in for the Michigan/MSU game in three weeks - if he hasn't committed by then, it's expected that he will during the visit. Robinson is almost a 100% lock for universal 5-star status amongst the recruiting services, and could possibly be a top 10 nationally kind of player.

Meanwhile, the crowd raving about the new Michigan staff ignoring the state of Michigan when it comes to recruiting are a bit quieter this week, as the commitment of Jackson and the offer to Detroit Southeastern DE William Gholston. I have been skeptical about Michigan's chances with the younger Gholston, and I remain pessimistic.

Staying in-state, one of the more intriguing early storylines is that of Detroit Cass Tech cornerback Dior Mathis. Since about the spring, the word had been that the lifelong Hurricane fan was going to commit to Miami on September 1st, the first day official offers for the 2010 class went out. Since then, Michigan has seemed to have completely closed the gap.

Scout's North Recruiting Notebook:
The team the Badgers faced on Saturday, the Michigan Wolverines hosted a number of recruits for the game. The list included five star defensive tackle William Campbell (Detroit Cass Tech) and several top juniors, including Campbell's teammate Dior Mathis. Mathis, who has had Miami-FL in the lead for quite some time, enjoyed the game enough to say that the maize and blue are very much in his mind.

"I'm feeling some pressure now. After this game, I said, man, this is going to be hard. I want to wait for some new schools though, USC has been contacting me. They're sending me letters."

With Teric Jones and Thomas Gordon in the fold, and William Campbell out there but likely returning to Michigan, color me cautiously optimistic. Mathis - along with the rest of his Cass Tech teammates - is expected to be at the rest of Michigan's home games this season, and with a very pro-UM coaching staff (headed by former M RB Thomas Wilcher), so hopefully all these factors lead to Michigan locking down Cass Tech High School.

Elsewhere, ESPN, while still amateurish when it comes to recruiting, has regional blogs where writers follow high school kids around and provides semi-analysis on them. Their Midwest Recruiting Blog recently had a story on 2010 PA LB Mike Hull.

Hull is also a legacy. His dad Tom Hull played linebacker for Penn State as well as in the NFL for the Green Bay Packers and San Francisco 49ers.

Mike Hull already has scholarship offers from Penn State, Pitt, Michigan and West Virginia.

"I sort of like all the Big Ten schools," Hull said. "I'll probably stay in the Big Ten. I like Penn State, Ohio State, Michigan, Iowa, pretty much anyone that gives me the opportunity. I've heard from all of them."

Hull plans to attend the Illinois at Penn State game this weekend. He also would like to see games at Pitt, West Virginia and Ohio State. Hull will attend the Penn State at Ohio State game Oct. 25 and it is quite possible his decision could come down to one of those two schools.

"I'd say Penn State is probably my favorite right now," Hull said. "But I want to give every other school equal opportunity and see what is out there."

Penn State fans are penciling Hull into their 2010 class like Michigan fans are penciling in Marvin Robinson. All signs point to Hull being the next great white linebacker in State College.

Those are the highlights. Full recruiting board is below and updated.
