1st and 10: The left side of the line caves in. Ortmann flails around terribly, and Dorrestein gets turned inside out. Against a MAC team.

2nd and 10: I have no idea what Dorrestein is doing here. He lets the DE go by as he scoots the second level, where he doesn't block anyone. The DE he let go is right on McGuffie. Ortmann is also tossed aside (!), and his man finishes the play.

Butler (-2)

1st and 10: Moosman squashes his guy to the ground, and Molk gets a nice push.

2nd and 6: Moundros is a lead blocker, and Schilling and Moosman provide nice protection on the edge, sending McGuffie upfield.

1st and 10: Minor is lined up at the H-back/tight end spot that Moundros occupied for a few plays last week. He does nothing here. Moosman is obscenely beaten here, forcing McGuffie to cut. Luckily Molk and Ortmann have created a hole for him to cut into.

2nd and 4: I truly don't understand why Minor is the fullback here. He charges ahead and completely whiffs. I mean seriously, he runs right through the line into the secondary, while McGuffie is stuffed short of the first down. Nice push from the line in general though, particularly Molk and Ortmann.

3rd and 1: This is actually a very solid playcall. Put Moundros back in at FB, put Grady at RB, give the illusion that you're going right up the gut on 3rd and short. Moundros motions to the strong side, but the snap is immediate. In the past, Michigan either runs right up the middle here, or the fullback in motion is so drawn out the defense has time. Here they have none and are caught offguard by the outside run with the power back. Schilling does a swell job, and Koger gets a nice block on the second level. Kudos on the playcall in this case, a very underrated aspect. (Disclaimer: That's not to say there's a problem running up the gut on 3rd and 1; it usually works. But nobody expects a sweep outside with the big fella.)

1st and goal: Well color me shocked. Carson Butler with the matador block on the linebacker. Jesus christ, why is Butler even in the game anymore. One play later, Toledo returns an interception ten thousand yards for a touchdown. @#$%!

1st and 10: Nice block by Ortmann, but because Threet isn't feared as a runner, McGuffie is keyed on immediately.

1st and 10: In a move that doesn't surprise me anymore, the BTN misses the beginning of this play. I see Schilling missing a cut block, and from what I can tell Ortmann misses a block too.

2nd and 7: Oy. This play is in trouble from the start as Toledo blitzes a safety and linebacker right into the direction this one is headed. The blitzers are eluded, but Moosman fails miserably at a cutblock. Christ.

Grady

1st and 10: This looks kind of kooky. It's a zone read...and there's nobody to read! Ortmann crushes his guy and Dorrestein mashes his inside, leaving Threet, McGuffie, and a linebacker too far back to be any sort of read guy. Weird, but it worked.

2nd and 1: Okay, this is just ridiculous. Grady completely misses the hole and runs right into Ortmann, who is on top of a Toledo defender. WTF?

3rd and 1: Ortmann barely makes contact with his guy and just falls down. WTF?? That guy then gets McGuffie short of the first down.

4th and 1: Dorrestein clears his man out. Moundros gets a great cut block on the next level...but he ran past some unblocked defenders, who nearly stonewalled this play.

1st and 10: Good job by Ortmann here turning the DT inside, giving Shaw a hole to zip through on the read play.

2nd and 5: A "meh" play. Nobody gets beaten, it just gets strung out. I don't think Toledo is scared of Michigan's QB throwing the ball...

3rd and 4: Grady is the H-back position thingy this time, and he misses his block. This was being sniffed out anyway by a cheating safety. Even on 3rd and 4, a passing down, Toledo cheats toward the run because Threet can't throw.

2nd and 12: Okay, now this, I have a problem with. This is not a good playcall at anytime. If you want to run the ball on 2nd and long because you don't trust your QB to throw it (understandable), fine. But put it in McGuffie's hands. Don't call a QB draw. There aren't even any missed blocks or anything here. This play just sucks.

1st and 10: Mathews drives the corner back. Although Schilling's man ultimately makes the tackle, he got a good enough block to get McGuffie to the edge. Also a good block downfield by Moosman.

2nd and 1: Moundros with a solid (!) cut block here. Moosman mashes his guy at the LOS, and Molk does a nice job getting to the second level and sticking his helmet on a linebacker.

2nd and 10: Holding on Schilling.

2nd and 20: Schilling gets driven back, denying McGuffie the edge this time. No edge = no room. Half ends.

1st and 10: Enter Sheridan here. End is frozen by the zone play, and Moosman gets a good seal block inside. McGuffie finds it.

2nd and 4: Good decision to pull the ball out; Toledo sells out on McGuffie.

1st and 10: Dorrestein gets away with another hold. Good block by Molk after a great cutback by McGuffie.

2nd and 5: Schilling occupies his guy, and Moosman drills his downfield a bit.

1st and 10: Grady is at the H-back spot again, and again he fails to get a good block. Why not put Moundros in there for this??

1st and 10: Schilling leads the way. It's obvious the defense respects Sheridan's legs much more than Threet's, as they are hesitating on the zone reads. (Disclaimer: That was not me advocating Sheridan as starter.)

2nd and 2: Nice job all around here by the left side + Molk. They looked like what Michigan linemen should normally look like against a MAC team...

1st and 10: Michigan's no huddle catches BTN napping, but Ortmann is holding anyway.

1st and 20: Here is the return of the odd shotgun formation with Shaw and McGuffie both to the left of the QB. I'm not sure if this is just to confuse the defense and if Sheridan has the choice to pull it out and run an option with McGuffie, but regardless, it goes to Shaw up the middle. He goes into a mass of humanity, but I see Ortmann missing a cut block. RAWR.

1st and 10: Basic QB sweep. Nice block by Moosman upfield, it gets Sheridan a couple extra yards.

2nd and 2: Good push by Dorrestein, but the read guy is disciplined and waiting for McGuffie.

1st and 10: Schilling and Moosman do a good job, but Dorrestein whiffs on a block down the line. I actually think McGuffie could've slipped through Schilling and Moosman for more.

Chart's done here. Sheridan throws another INT two plays later, and after that it's all passes save for the surprise Shaw run on the final doomed drive.

Thoughts:

  • Well...yeah. 170 yards rushing, 4.4 YPC. +6 seems about right, I guess. It was the passing game that was a gigantic failure in this game. That and Scott Shafer channelling the spirit of Jim Hermann.
  • The line wasn't that bad in run blocking...but still, +6 against a middling MAC team. Whatever.
  • Stop playing Butler!
  • Penn State's going to kill us.
