Thoughts:

• If you look at the play by play, you notice that 69 yards came on two carries. Other than that, this was a very mediocre performance that would've been even worse if I charted pass protection, since Saint-Dic lived in the backfield all day.
• It's interesting to consider: What would've happened if Hart was healthy enough to have more than two carries in the second half? It is not unreasonable to assume that he would've popped off a couple more 30+ yarders, but how would that have altered the playcalling? Would we still have fallen down by 10 if we had been able to move (run) the ball? If so, would we have still been able to come back? I ask that one because I'm wondering if DeBord and Carr would've let Henne sling it around as much as he did on the last two drives if there was a healthier Hart behind him. It's interesting to consider, and the -2 overall seems to be weird, but it is what it is.

• Holy Vince Helmuth, Batman!
• Predictably dominant performance by essentially everybody. Minnesota was gashed by North Dakota State. Anything short of squashed Gopher would've been disastrous. It's a shame, Hart would've gone for 225 easily.
• What happened with Ciulla? Was he yanked? I didn't catch where he was replaced by McAvoy, and I did not see him limp off or anything.
• Henne must play on Saturday against MSU. Mallett's limited knowledge of the playbook aside, Michigan simply cannot afford to cough up more fumbles like Mallett has been doing. Ron English has salvaged this defense, and Henne must play on Saturday (and get good blocking) so the D isn't put in bad spots by Mallett losing the ball.

I'll do some kind of MSU preview tomorrow/later today, if I feel inspired enough.

Thoughts:

• So apparently Jake Long IS human.
• Boren botched two more snaps at Center, one with Henne and one with Mallett. The turnover on the fumbled snap when Kraus was at Center was 100% on Mallett. There was really no noticeable difference after the switch; at least in run blocking.
• The "WTF" on Carry #29: Um...it looks like a zone read. If Chad Henne ever runs the zone read play out of the shotgun again, Lloyd Carr and Mike DeBord should be institutionalized ASAP. I'm not kidding. Zone read?! Are you serious? GTFO with that garbage.
  
• +12 would normally be a "meh" performance, but considering it was in hostile "Muck Fichigan" territory at night and our Messiah Number Twenty was on the sideline in street clothes, it's acceptable.
• First down run-to-pass ratio this week was 23:11, 67.6%. That includes the botched snaps, and does not include the kneel down on 1st down at the end of the game. 67.6 is an ugly number, but understandable I guess with Mallett seeing significant time.
  
• I am of the opinion that Mike Hart and, if possible, Chad Henne, should BOTH play on Saturday against Minnesota. Aside from the fact that no game can be taken for granted, I don't like the idea of them possibly being rusty headed into East Lansing next weekend; Hart especially. I don't question his work ethic or focus in the least, but two weeks without any contact just doesn't sit well. That's just me though. My guess: Hart plays (perhaps sparingly, 15-20 carries for the game, and he starts), Henne doesn't.

• I swear I'm being objective when watching Jake Long. He's just not getting beat, period.
• Boren was actually improved. Still in the red, but he looked better.

• On 37 first down plays, Michigan ran the ball 22 times - about 59.5%, a much healthier ratio. That includes all plays, not just Mike Hart carries. But look at the result: 48 points, a career day for Mario Manningham, Carlos Brown looked great in the 2nd half when Hart and Minor were injured, and no INTs for Chad Henne. On the first play of the game, Michigan ran playaction and got a first down on a pass to Carson Butler. I hope this was a turning point in the season for Carr and DeBord - keep the defenses honest by throwing on first down, and this offense is pretty damn potent. Considering the task ahead of us in Illinois, a potent offense will be required. Illinois doesn't scare me nearly as much as they did a week ago because Juice Williams can't throw, but we've all seen what a mobile QB can do when he runs the option against Michigan's defense. The offense is going to have to bring it, just like they did today.
  

Please be okay Mike. The Illinois fear factor is reduced by the fact that they lost to William Shatner (AKA Kirk Ferentz), but still...spread offense, mobile QB, etc...we need you. That and the whole "Heisman frontrunner thing".

• A predictably dominant performance, considering Hart's numbers.
• Jake Long for Outland.
• Justin Boren...sigh. Even against a lower-tier MAC team, he was getting blown back off the ball. It's either a flaw in his technique, which I would HOPE the coaches would've noticed, or he just needs to bulk up. Hit the weight room, son!
• Interesting, moving Schilling in to RG and putting Ortmann at RT. Both were positives (side note: Remember this is a Hart Chart, so only run blocking is taken into consideration. Schilling was below average in pass protection in this game and nearly got Henne killed at one point). McAvoy is listed as the RG starter for Purdue, with Schilling back at RT. I'd like to see Ortmann against a better opponent, to gauge his effectiveness.
• By my count (including runs not by Mike, extended handoffs, and the garbage time 4th quarter), Michigan ran the ball 23 out of 31 times on first down, about 74%. What's that called again? Oh yeah: "Rock. Rock. Definitely rock."

Ed. note: I hate the Big Ten Network. Not because I don't get it (since I do), but because it's such a poorly run organization, and their cameras are horrible for the games they air. They're constantly zooming in and zooming out and placed at bizarre angles, making my Hart Charting even more tedious. Thoughts:

• Lots of stalemates this game, hence the overall numbers are down.
• A pretty disappointing performance, especially considering the +14 against Penn State, whose defense is many times better.
• Start looking ahead to see what defensive tackles we're playing...because Justin Boren will be driven back by them many times.
• Our tight ends aren't very good at blocking at all. Massey is also now gone for the season (knee); Butler was better against Penn State, which is enigmatic.
• Even Jake had a down game...but was still the best guy on the line, as usual.
• Schilling looked better.
  

Hart Chart: Penn State

This will be this week's GBU, since the entire game revolved around #20 (I'm considering making this the main "recap" thingie anyway and just providing other thoughts after the charting goodness. Or maybe I'll expand into something else. I dunno yet. Ideas?) It is a mini-version of Brian's excellently done UFRs. In this case, all I do is chart, to the best of my ability, Mike Hart and the offensive line, and like Brian does for essentially everything, I tally up the positives and negatives to see the end result. On a side note, I have a newfound appreciation for Brian and the UFRs. I lost my mind just tracking #20 and the big guys up front; he does the entire game, offense and defense, and is to be sent 73 virgins as thanks.

• The Yay and Nay columns reflect the player's affect on the ultimate result of the play. Hence, if the play was zone left, Schilling was blown up, but his guy did not ultimately affect the play, Schilling is not put in the Nay column. On the other hand, if it was zone right and Big Jake steamrolled his guy, Jake would probably not get in the Yay column unless it somehow helped Mike on the carry.

Thoughts:

• I may need to divert some of my mancrush onto Jake Long.
• Schilling isn't nearly as bad as this game indicates.
• I don't think Justin Boren is, either...but he had a very, very tough time out there.
• Why is Mike Massey starting? Or even seeing significant time?
• I'm still not sold on Moundros. I long for the days of Aaron Shea and B.J. Askew, when the fullback was actually a part of the offense. Moundros is just kind of...wild. He doesn't seem to knowingly block, he just kind of throws himself around. But it's not to the point where it's a hinderance...yet.

Overall though...Michigan got the yards on the ground when they needed them against a very stout Penn State defense. I haven't seen enough of Wisconsin and Ohio State against quality competition, but PSU's front seven might be the best Michigan sees, and even if the Badgers or Buckeyes are better, the struggles of the youngsters on UM's line should be remedied.

Or we could just zone left 40 times a game. Whichever.
