1st and 10: Moosman clears out Jared Odrick, McAvoy clears out Ollie Ogbu, and Molk gets enough of Josh Hull to spring Minor up the middle.

2nd and 4: Josh Gaines crashes down on Minor; Threet deftly pulls it out on the read. Ortmann gets enough of Navorro Bowman to help his quarterback get the first down.

1st and 10: McAvoy and Molk are stood up this time by Odrick and Abe Koroma. Minor runs into the pile.

2nd and 7: Basic play that Penn State seems surprised by. Ortmann (illegally) holds Maurice Evans, but McAvoy randomly fails to block Bowman, who grabs Threet by the legs. Seriously, McAvoy engages Bowman, and then...doesn't.

3rd and 2: Threet gets them to sell out on the zone fake, but nickel back Drew Astorino shoots in from his safety spot. Nice play by the D.

4th and 1: Yikes. Bowman shoots in immediately, and Odrick just sort of goes past Moosman. Minor is major (I'll only do that once) though, and sheds them both, and fights for the first.

1st and 10: Minor is the lead blocker here. Schilling clears out Bowman, and Minor sticks Hull, and Threet lopes forward for five.

2nd and 5: This play is weird. The offensive line looks sort of...confused here. They all move (for the most part) to their right, and Odrick shoots through past Moosman, but Minor breaks that tackle. McAvoy, also moving right, crushes Koroma to the ground. Ortmann escorts Evans out of the way as well, giving Minor room after shedding Odrick.

1st and 10: Koger and McAvoy block Hull and Bowman, respectively. I thought about giving Ortmann a -1 because he got taken into the backfield by Evans, but sort of gained leverage and buried Evans in the grass. It's a wash.

2nd and 5: Moosman is beaten again by Odrick, who hits Minor to slow him, but not stop him. Molk seals off Ogbu, helping turn the play into a positive.

3rd and 1: Moundros, the FB, takes Tony Davis's legs out, while Ortmann drives Tyrell Sales out of harm's way. There are bodies flying elsewhere, but enough room is cleared by Minor to drive into the endzone.

2nd and 10: This is kind of funny. Bowman, the inside linebacker, actually steps out to account for Threet on the zone play, when Minor has the ball. This effectively takes him out of the play and leaves space for Minor when he gets through the line. Meanwhile, Ortmann contains Aaron Maybin, Molk turns Odrick away from Minor, and McAvoy gets enough of Hull that Minor can just blow through his arm tackle.

2nd and 7: Kind of weird giving no yays and no nays on a positive play, but Ortmann gets tossed aside like woah by Maybin, and McAvoy doesn't really block anybody. Threet goes down in a mass of humanity.

3rd and 4: Uh, I hate this on every imaginable level. On the actual play, Molk gets driven back by Odrick. But seriously, what's with this? An outside run with a cold running back on 3rd and 4? If this was a zone read play, Threet has the first down with ease on a pull out. But this is just catastrophic. This makes it 4th and 6. 12 men on the field for Penn State then makes it 4th and 1, and here's where I really go off the rails. If a better play is called on 3rd down (one that DOESN'T lose two yards), the penalty gives Michigan an automatic first down. And even then, I'm not a fan of kicking the FG on 4th down. Yeah, he made the kick. Yeah, you have to have some confidence in your defense...but dude. Go for it. Or call a better play so a penalty on the other team gives you a first down. Sigh. I'm just...completely frustrated by the sequence of events at the end of this drive.

1st and 10: Dorrestein is in for Ortmann here at RT. This is a blah play. McAvoy can't hold his block on Hull.

1st and 10: Not really an egregious error here. Moosman gets pushed back a bit by Odrick, and Minor trips over his leg when he tries to cut.

1st and 10: Dorrestein can't keep Bowman away here. Bowman sheds and tackles.

2nd and 8: Threet gets credit for the read, but uh...well, I guess James Rogers is a whatever-string WR for a reason. Barely lays a hand on Tony Davis on the perimeter.

3rd and 3: Is Penn State actually caught off guard by this? Schilling plants Evans in the ground, and Minor (in the right slot) and Stonum get nice downfield blocks.

1st and goal: Hard for anyone to stand out down here with everyone crowded around, but I do notice Schilling keeping Josh Gaines away from Threet. Anybody else think it's a sketchy idea telling your already hurt QB to run into the best group of linemen and linebackers in the conference??

2nd and goal: Moundros has a head of steam as a lead blocker, and probably blows up Hull or Tyrell Sales here, but Molk is driven back by Odrick and bumps Moundros, killing his momentum and any chance he had of giving Minor a decent block.

3rd and goal: The offensive line actually caves in here. There are about four white helmets around Minor, but he just blasts through. There's a reason goal line stands get as much hype as they do when they happen. Even when the offensive line is beaten, it's hard to slow down a bruising back.

I really wish I could stop charting now...

1st and 10: Whyyyyyyyy. Why. Why? Why why why?! Why call an outside run with your power back? Christ. Anyway, Koger, in the left slot, doesn't stand a chance against Michael Mauti, the linebacker.

1st and 10: Another outside run with Minor...this one works though. Molk contains Odrick. Koger keeps Gaines away for a moment, but loses him, and Gaines tackles, so that's a wash.

2nd and 5: Odrick gets inside of Moosman - again. Molk also gets no push at all on Koroma. Also, this didn't really effect the play, but it's just stupid: Ortmann, back in now at RT, basically just lowers his head and throws himself at Maybin. Maybin essentially just steps out of the way while Ortmann crashes into the grass. Maybin jumps on the dogpile. WTF?

3rd and 4: This is the formation with Threet in the gun with two running backs next to him on the same side. Moosman gets bulldozed by Odrick, but that's irrelevant, as Mauti was blitzing right into this.

1st and 10: No idea what this was even going to be, since Molk snaps it low, and Threet nearly loses it and somehow gains 2 yards.

2nd and 8: Hey, the outside run works again. Maybin rushes upfield, playing right into Michigan's hands. Dorrestein keeps him there while Minor zips through the gap. Nice blocks downfield by Koger and McAvoy.

2nd and 4: Mauti overruns this and gets buried by McAvoy. Minor gets a solid piece of Hull.

1st and 10: Ogbu gets inside of Molk here, disrupting things and allowing Gaines and Evans to clean up for a minimal gain.

Alright, I'm done with this. This drive dies, Sheridan enters, and Penn State scores 31 more points.

Thoughts:

  • A good performance. Penn State adjusted after the first 20 minutes of the game, and Threet wasn't able to keep them honest with his arm. Once Sheridan entered, any hope of winning this game was extinguished.
  • Minor should be the guy until further notice, and he should be running between the tackles.
  • Penn State's defensive tackles, Ollie Ogbu and particularly Jared Odrick, for the most part, ate David Molk and David Moosman for breakfast. This was a similar occurrence last year when Adam Kraus, Justin Boren and Alex Mitchell were Michigan's interior linemen. None of the latter were spectacular, but they were better than what we've got now. The DTs are just good.
  • Michigan State is very beatable, provided Michigan's offense runs the ball with similar productivity, Steven Threet stays on the field and is halfway respectable, and the defense remembers how to tackle. The probability of Javon Ringer breaking a tackle, getting outside and running for 50 yards are high, but this can be similar to the Wisconsin game. If Michigan limits the big plays, hangs onto the godforsaken ball and doesn't turn Brian Hoyer into Superman, well...we'll see.
